We are in a very delicate transition phase, because in the next 8 years the Italian electricity system will no longer be thermoelectric driven, but renewable and in particular non-programmable. Storage systems will play a very important role in both the adequacy of the electricity system and grid services for dispatching. Starting from the European evolutionary scenario, the aspects for a concrete development of storage systems technology in Italy, the mechanisms of operation and their impact on the grid will be explored.
